Aaron Sorensen is a rare young bass known for not only his powerful rich sound, but also his commanding stage presence. Mr. Sorensen has recently completed his fifth season with Des Moines Metro Opera where he sang the role of the jailor in Puccini’s Tosca and covered the roles of Basilio in Rossini’s Barbiere di Siviglia and Cuno in Von Weber’s Der Freishütz.
Recently, Mr. Sorensen was heard in the title role of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale with Opera Iowa tour. He has also sung Peter Quince in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the 2nd Armored Man in Die Zauberflöte, and the Keeper of the Madhouse in the Rake’s Progress with Des Moines Metro Opera. Mr. Sorensen’s other roles include Sparafucile in Verdi’s Rigoletto, where the Houston Chronicle hailed him as a “sinister and snarly voiced villain,” as well as Oroveso in Bellini’s Norma, and Ferrando in Verdi’s Il Trovatore with Houston’s Opera in the Heights. He has also sung Bob Beckett in H.M.S. Pinafore and Jaun Paublo in the world premiere of Bloodlines with Opera Omaha. Mr. Sorensen’s other singing credits include Argante in Rinaldo, Snug in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Hermit in Der Freishütz, Mr. Jaggers in Miss Havishams Fire, and the cook in Love for Three Oranges.
In the upcoming 2010 season, Mr. Sorensen can be heard singing the role of Sarastro in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte with Kansas Concert Opera and Angelotti in Puccini’s Tosca with Glimmerglass Opera.
